The Lithuanian Castles and Manors Association invites you on a journey through the ages: learn about the influence of connections on manors, their architecture and lifestyle

2024 10 18

The Lithuanian Castles and Manors Association is implementing the project ‘The Influence of Connections on the Heritage of Lithuanian Manors’, which aims at a deeper understanding of the historical heritage path. The Association invites all lovers of castles and manors and all those with an active interest in them to the conference ‘The Influence of Connections on Manors: a Journey through the Ages’ to discover and learn more from heritage experts and scholars about the influence of connections on manors, their architecture, lifestyle and more.

Since ancient times, landlords, often prominent public figures, were active in international relations, travelling extensively, hosting foreign guests at their estates, corresponding and cooperating with them. The opportunities to exchange ideas and share experiences influenced manors at various levels, including their appearance, driving changes in the style of buildings, estate ensembles and their parks.

Each manor is completely distinctive, unique and of particular importance to the identity of the place where it is located. It is interesting to study and observe how manors have changed over time, to understand how strongly they reflect the place and the people who lived there, but also how they are linked to foreign connections and influences.

Scientific conference at the Plungė Manor

On 25 October, the Lithuanian Castles and Manors Association invites you to a scientific conference ‘The Influence of Connections on Manors: a Journey through the Ages’, which will bring together renowned Lithuanian scholars and cultural heritage experts. The event is open to owners and managers of manorial heritage, enthusiasts and anyone interested. Participants will learn about the impact of foreign relations on the heritage of Lithuanian manors, discuss the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage and share their experiences and insights. The conference will be held at the Plungė Manor, whose history is also one of the most interesting examples of how the manor has been influenced by its wider connections with the world. Active members of the local community will be involved in organising the event and will present an example of the estate through the project theme.

The theme of the event will reach the general public through the participation of all the members of the Association, owners and managers of castles and manors, who will present historical moments of their castle or manor, revealing foreign influences on the heritage object under their care. The most interesting stories and facts about the manors and castles will be presented online and other information media during the implementation of the project.

“It is important for the promotion and preservation of the heritage of Lithuanian castles and manors to have continuous opportunities for development. Every year, the Lithuanian Castles and Manors Association invites its members and the general public interested in manor heritage to educational events and conferences. These are great opportunities to meet, share insights and get to know the sustainable values of our country,” says Gintaras Karosas, President of the Lithuanian Castles and Manors Association.

The conference at the Plungė Manor will include a presentation by Dr Dalė Puodžiukienė, a researcher of manors and architectural historian, on ‘The Living Space of the Nobility in the 16th-17th Centuries: The Influence of Western Culture on Architectural Change’, and a presentation by Dr Neringa Dambrauskaitė-Martinkėnė, a historian and lecturer at Vilnius University, on ‘The Objects in Manors: The Witnesses of the Daily Life of the Nobility of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 16th Century to the First Half of the 17th Century’. Art historian Associate Professor Dr Birutė Rūta Vitkauskienė will present some interesting features of baroque manors and the case of Vilnius Sapieha Palace, while architectural historian and heritage expert Dr Marius Daraškevičius will talk about the architecture and equipment of manor kitchens, significant connections and influences.

The Lithuanian Castles and Manors Association unites 67 of Lithuanian castles and manors, which are state-owned, privately owned or managed by non-governmental organisations.

The project 'The Influence of Connections on Manors: a Journey through the Ages' is co-funded by the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture.
